A regenerator is a device that corrects a digital signal if it has been corrupted (damaged) in its journey.
The signal might be damaged by attenuation or by noise being added to it.
A digital signal is a series of square pulses. If they become 'rounded' the regenerator will reshape them into square wave pulses, ensure the gaps between them are right then resend to the next regenerator down the line (or to the receiver).
This ensures you receive a message or picture you can understand.
